Subject: Question for Coach Moon

I saw something at the local high school game last night that I can't remember seeing before and I want to know if you had come across it. First some background: I went to the game with Nathan and the first thing we did was get our food and sit on the visitor's side because it wasn't too crowded. While watching the game, I didn't think too much of the local team's coach's play calling (but I hardly agree with any coach's play calling). One thing I found curious and didn't like was that he made his QB run to the sideline after every play to get the next play. One time he ran the option to the far side of the field, made the pitch as he was getting creamed and the back got a real good gain. After the run I looked to see if the QB was alright and I saw him coming back from talking to the coach. #1) Is this normal play calling? (NOTE: That is not the unusual question.)

After we ate, we went to sit on the home team's side. The next thing I didn't like was it seemed that this head coach was offensive coordinator only. While the defense was on the field, he didn't say a word (encouragement, abuse for missing a tackle, nothing). When the offense went on the field, he took over calling the plays and got on the kids when they messed up. The QB is a first year starter and a sophomore who didn't look too bad for being so young. Finally the situation: Trailing 12-6 before halftime and fourth and 15 from about the opponent's 40 he first sends out the punting team. He then calls time out, brings the offense back on the field and calls a pass play. The QB rolls to the far side and the weak side LB runs a sprint from the shortside and blindsides this kid bad before he throws the ball. Kid's ok but the coach is livid and is yelling at the whole O-line as they leave the field. After a few minutes he comes down the bench and starts ripping into this 10th grader for I think not having a wing back positioned correctly on the backside to block this linebacker. The yelling goes back and forth for about 30 seconds and then the QB takes off his jersey and shoulder pads and throws them on the field. He takes the plays from his forearms and throws them at the coach and walks towards the locker room. Some assistants try to talk to the kid but don't stop him because I think the head coach says to let him go. (I don't think this matters but the head coach is white, some of the assistants are black and the QB and most of the good players are black). Have you ever seen a kid quit the team in the 2nd quarter of a game? Would you let the kid leave the field?

The half came and the rest of the kids seemed shocked by what happened. The QB didn't come out for the second half and the local team lost 34-6. While I was there, the coach didn't yell at one more player and actually began trying to get them fired up with encouragement but they didn't seem to be listening.

Just a little story that I thought would interest you and I'm curious about your thoughts.

P.S. How did the Cougars do this week? Still undefeated?

Take care.

Koz
