Subject: etiquette for fantasy leagues

By Ryan E. Houston, Special to CNNSI.com

Is there anything more frustrating than being in a league and not being able to make a single trade? I find it very upsetting. You start your season slowly and want to do something to "shake it up" or "spark" a comeback and every owner in your league simply doesn't respond to e-mails or doesn't have the passion you do. What can you do about it? Here are a couple things I found that work good for the leagues I participate in.

1. Penalty for not answering e-mails. If you play in a league that has participants all over the globe, e-mail is the only way to contact them. In one of my leagues we have an e-mail etiquette rule that strictly enforces answering every trade request and e-mail. A simple "no" is sufficient, but blowing off the e-mail entirely leads to sanctions by the Executive Committee. This includes banishment for inactive owners who fail to be proactive in the league.

2. Force owners to get together once a week. We do this by making free agency an auction format. Each owner is given a set amount of money ($100) and able to bid on free agents. Once the $100 is gone, they can't get anymore free agents. We also allow the money to be traded in deals which adds to the nuances of deals. We do this live, once a week in the Asylum chat room. It's also a great time to make deals and talk about other league issues when everyone is together.

The key to a successful fantasy league is participating. If every owner is active and participates in all facets of owning their team, the league will be a success. Making trades, acquiring free agents, and talking smack are all the nuances that make this game enjoyable. Without that, we might as all play in Survivor leagues! interesting ideas
