Hi Dean,

There are considerable differences between the two churches and since both are evolving entities it is not as easy to answer as it once was. One obvious difference is in the size of the organizations - the LDS Church (HQ in Salt Lake City) has millions of members - the Community of Christ (formerly RLDS - HQ in Independence) has in the neighborhood of 250,000 members.

Though we share a common organization history from approximately 1830 to 1844 our paths started diverging even earlier. The majority of the quorom of twelve took leadership of much of the church based in Nauvoo, Illinois and the English converts and moved them to Utah. Here the doctrines of polygamy were practiced openly. The Reorganized Church remained primarily in the MidWest and rejected temple marriage and eventually baptism for the dead through nonpractice. The RLDS church never accepted the Book of Abraham as scripture and escaped the LDS doctrine of not ordaining people of African descent to the priesthood, that the LDS finally rejected in 1980. The Community of Christ (RLDS) began ordain women to priesthood offices in the mid 1980s.

Those are differences that initially come to mind - I'm sure others will eventually add (or modify) this listing in time.
