start with the hobbit...it is not quiet as epic, powerful, nor geared towards the older reader as the fellowship of the ring, the two towers, and the return of the king, but it would make allot of things more understandable...because it sets the frame work in motion...I have read them each at least 4-6 times a peice, and could probably give you a summary narration of the entire story that would save you allot of time...hge wrote enough for about 10-15 books, sadly, only one age of the 4 ages of his world had a portin of it come to print as a story, yet his son, chris tolkien, published about 7-8 volumes of his notes on these stories, the similarion(very well documented essays on the first age, the time of the elves and their war against morgoth or melekor(the devil)and the second age and the fall of the greatest of the kingdoms of man, nurmeor, into the sea as they where bewitched by the evil of sauron(one of melekors minions who turned man against the gods and elves), and sevreal books of langauges of the races he developed(tolkein was an oxford english professor, and had one of the most amazing comands of dialect and language I have ever seen in an author)...but if you want me to fill you in on what happens in the lord of the rings, I would gladly fo it.
