SanDisk's Flash Memory Cards to be Supported by QUALCOMM's CDMA Chipsets and System Software
SanDisk MultiMediaCards To Provide Storage For Next-Generation Wireless Internet Mobile Phones
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2000-- SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK - news), today announced that QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, will provide support for flash storage MultiMediaCards, co-invented by SanDisk, in QUALCOMM's CDMA chipsets and system software solutions.

The announcement marks QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies' (QCT) initial support for a removable storage card in its CDMA chipsets and system software.

The first QCT product that will utilize the stamp-sized MultiMediaCard will be the MSM3300(tm) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(tm)) solution, the first multimedia-enabled chipset and system software solution. With built-in support for the MultiMediaCard, the MSM3300 solution features the highest level of integration of multimedia features available for mobile phones, providing Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite location information, wireless communications based on the Bluetooth standard, and multimedia audio such as MP3 music and Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software. An interface for MultiMediaCard storage will be built into the MSM3300 solution, allowing future phones to store CD-quality music, mapping information from a geographical navigation service, voice mail and data from other applications.

SanDisk is the world's largest supplier of removable flash memory MultiMediaCards. They are currently available from SanDisk in 8, 16, 32 and 64 megabyte (MB) capacities. The compact size (36mm x 43mm x 3.3mm) and low power requirement of the 2.7 volt SanDisk flash memory MultiMediaCard makes it an ideal storage medium for battery-powered devices such as mobile phones.

Johan Lodenius, senior vice president of marketing and product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies, said, ``The ultra-small SanDisk MultiMediaCard, offering mass storage in a rugged, standards-based format, was a logical choice. QUALCOMM expects that the MultiMediaCard will be a key enabling technology for future wireless technology.''

Nelson Chan, SanDisk's senior vice president of marketing, said, ``QUALCOMM's support for the SanDisk MultiMediaCard reflects the exploding market for Internet smart phones. Our advanced flash memory cards enable manufacturers and service providers to greatly expand functionality and differentiate their products, enhancing a new generation of ultra-portable devices with removable MultiMediaCard slots. These slots will offer users wireless communications, Internet access, GPS position location, multimedia music and much more.''

SanDisk Corporation, the world's largest supplier of flash data storage products, designs, manufactures and markets industry-standard, solid-state data, digital imaging and audio storage products using its patented, high density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is based in Sunnyvale, CA.
