The Cutting Edge

Long hair may still have its followers, but super short hair is always sexy for the comimg summer months!

When the temperature goes up (although we may be living in eternal hope), there's no better time to take the length off your hair. Short hair keeps your neck and shoulders cool, and it takes only minutes to wash and ease into shape. Plus the new styles this summer have lots of movement and interesting textures that are created by razoring the hair into chunky layers. If you're worried that cutting your hair off will make you look boyish, then think again. The looks this season have totally escaped the androgynous chic of the Nineties. Actually short hair flatters most people - except those with very curly, kinky hair.

Less care. Little maintenance. Ready to wear. When you consider everything, sometimes the shortest, simplest cut is exactly what you've been looking for!

The practical pixie
The pixie is especially perfect for those of you with thick hair that's difficult to control. The sides are sheared, but some length is left along the crown. This summer the pixie features a stronger, sharper combination of short and long pieces, which adds more depth and versatility to the look. Pixies are also being cut with razors instead of scissors.

"It's sophisticated, fresh and young", says master stylist Phillip Carreon from the Profile salon in the US.

The other big benefit to these cuts is that they require no styling. Basically all you have to do is get some gel or mousse and finger-style the crown into place. For some different looks, you can change the crown by blow-drying it straight or just pulling it all back with accessories like clips or a headband.

Pixies are best suited for women with small faces, chiselled features and slim figures. Remember that a pixie is baring - so it also requires a big personality to carry it off properly.

The crisp, clean crop
If you have a rounder face, then you may benefit more from a crop or crew cut instead of a pixie. Like the pixie, the crop is shaved close at the nape of the neck, but instead of a longer, layered top, it is razor-bevelled all over. For those scared to go for the total cut, a choppy bang adds movement as well as flattering the eyes.
"The cut is modern and looks cute on lots of people," said Cemal, a stylist at Artists. "The cut is perfectly imperfect, if you know what I mean."

Styling a crop is simple - just wash and dry it. If you opt for a version with a fringe, you can coax them forward by using mousse, a vent brush and a blowdryer.

The bold new bob
This style works best on sleek, sophisticated women who like to be noticed. Natalie Portman is the latest celebrity to don the classic but severely shortened bob. The cut gets most of its impact from a tiny razored and short, tapered sides that hug the ears.

"This bob is in total control",says my friend and master stylist Karla Wilson of Hair Benders.

Because it has a strong silhouette, it's better for those with fine, straight hair. For an ultra-smooth finish, you should coat your hair with a glossifying creme and blow-dry with a large, round brush. You can also shape it up for variety by directing all the sections forward to completely frame your face. This adds softness and fullness on days when you're feeling shy. Or you can lift the back of the crown and tuck the sides behind your ears for a younger look.

The short, sexy shag
This cut is a little bit longer than the others. Think classic Meg Ryan. It's characterised by random, razor-cut ends all over that create a messy, undone look. It's the razor cutting that takes the weight out of the hair and makes the ends flick up.

"This is very versatile and can be styled straight or wavy," says Meg's personal stylist Sally Hershberger.

Generally, mousse or lotion is used as the hair is being blown out and then pomade is run through the crown to give it the broken up look. It allows you to scrunch or straighten waves into chunky pieces. All those little pieces sticking out is what gives it the shag its playful sexiness. This cut in particular works on all types of hair - all it requires is a relaxed attitude.

At the end of the day the secret to great hair at any length is a flawless cut, so choose a hairstylist carefully. A good stylist will make sure you have the appropriate hair type and face shape before letting you go for that sizzlingly short cut this summer. Then just sit back and enjoy the results.
