Ginny, Thanks for posting!

I see this one of two ways, either your hairdresser is persuading you not to go too short because she really thinks the style won't be flattering on you and you will be be unhappy with her work, or she has a personal bias toward short hair and is trying to keep you in a long style which she knows is making you unhappy. Which do you think it is? Which is more probable? Hmmm, I thought so too...

Now let's talk about hair biases and image discernment for a sec.

Everyone has looks that they like or do not like. (This goes double for the male species who equate your looks seruptitously to other women they have known) -However just like them, what influences your own personal likes and dislikes are seldom things which you can control. Here's an example:

I found out that a 40 y/o attractive client was unwilling to cut her longhair in a shag because aas she explained an old highschool rival wore a shag and ever since shag haircuts always reminded her of the unhappy times from her youth. Try as she might she would reject my urging for layers out-of-hand in spite of the fact that she had imperfect features that were emphasized by long hair. Evenytually we got to the bottom of her objections and made her over. Needless to say she looked fab. (Of course!)

What happened here sounds extreme but it's a common thread in the excercise of self perception.

Her own biases had paralyzed her into what I call image indiscernment. In other words she was incapable of seeing her self objectively and choosing hair fashion without psychological bias. Those close to us are already polluted with their own perceptions as well.

This is why you need a trained professional to objectively evaluate your image with fact, not just opinion.

She found that after 17 years of worrying she was going to be somehow identified with her past this was nothing but a silly notion that was holding her back fashionwise. This fear had wrangled her into seeing herself through a clouded looking glass. Once I won her trust, I was able to explain this in terms she could understand. Now she has started the next chappter in her life with not only a new haircut, but a new outlook as well! Yes she is happier and you can see it in her face.

If this osunds like something you can identify with and you'd really like a professional opinion for a chnage, you can email at svenhair@hotmail.com
