The Perfect Hair Cut

Your hairstyle speaks a lot about you. Trendy or classy, wild or demure, whatever be the style, you must choose a cut that flatters your face. The problem is, how to determine which type of hair cut will complement the shape of your face?

Before the advent of technology in the hairdressers' salon, what you could do was experiment with various styles over a period of time and learn which style suits best. However, this was an agonizing process in which you would have to wait till an unflattering style grew out before you could switch to a new one. Now days, there is a computerized solution to this problem where you can actually see yourself on screen with various hairstyles and cuts superimposed on your head. This makes choosing a cut much easier. The downside is that when performed by the salon this is an expensive process. If you'd like to have some imaging like this done for free please email me personally for instructions on taking a picture suitable for digital mainpulation in our softwear. Along with your modified photo(s) I will include a personalized image assessment or makeover regimen.

If you prefer to be your own judge I'll give you some basic rules of thumb that you could follow while ultimately deciding upon a haircut for your self. First you need to determine the shape of your face. The simplest most intuitive way to do this is to stand close to the mirror and with a lipstick draw the outline of your face on the mirror. Stand back and observe the basic shape. (Remember to clean off the lipstick from the mirror with some alchohol afterward!) Then follow the guidelines given below relevant for your face shape.

Round Face

Hair will need lift at the top, length at the back, width at the sides - this will make the face look longer. This effect can also be achieved with a short haircut.

Square Face

Hair should cover the jaw line, don't cut it shorter than the jaw. Unless your willing to go ultra-short! Keep bottom length below the jaw line with angles cut into the hair around the face starting at the cheekbones.

Oval Face

This is considered the "ideal" face shape. As with the heart-shaped face, any hairstyle would look good short or long. Although in my opinion too many women with this face shape choose long and keep it that way forever.

Oblong Face

Try to keep hair short, long hair would only accentuate the length of the face. Also, if you face is long and thin, try bangs and fullness on the sides.

Heart shaped Face

Avoid having hair too close or too short. Keep some length behind the ears. Otherwise, any style will suit your face.

Pear shaped Face

Keep hair length well past the jaw line. Keep width and volume at the temples to balance out fullness on the lower part of the face.

If you have a Double Chin

Keep the hair about 1 1/2 to 2 inches below the jaw line or pulled back on the nape of the neck. Hair needs to be at least mid-neck to shoulder length with some height at the crown of the head.
