Color is great way to break out of a beauty rut, but please find yourself a curly hair specialist and get a good designer cut first. I've been "layering" long curly hair for almost five years to reduce bulk and break up the monotony of natural curl paterns to fit the new styles. The look is natural and taming. The technique is called tunnel cutting. But, It's closer to sculpture as opposed to measured and precise layering or cutting.

Here's how we do it: Starting with the crown, I decide whether the hair on top or underneath needs taming. (generally the more smoother laying of the two can be left alone) Then I shear verticaly into each damp section from anywhere from 1/5th to 1/3rd the length decending as I cut to the tips. I work in vertical slices for each section as I progress around the head. This technique is easy to learn, but must be practised and controlled to get the desired effect. The result should be to reduce bulk, undefine curl (add a new random curl patern) and even the weight distribution. If you want to keep your hair long this also will save the length and give more styling options.
I invite everyone interested to email me your own hair picture for more details about the ideal style for your special texture.
