Mike: I just heard Mike Schuman ,former WR for the Niners tell a story about Bill Walsh that you might enjoy. He said that Walsh was NOT a coach to run up the score on anyone BUT on one occasion he made an exception. When Jack Paterra was the coach of the Seahawks(they were in the Niners division for their first few years before they were moved to the AFC west)Paterra ran up the score on the Niners and was still running trick plays late in the 4th quarter of a blowout Hawks victory. Schuman said that in a later game Walsh took his revenge and told the players he and them were about to get a little even. The niners were WAY ahead and the clock was running out and Walsh told Joe to Kneel down as usual but this time after a few seconds he got back up(in those days the Qb had to be touched before he was down ,now I think kneeling down may automatically stop the play)Anyway, the WR's started walking off like the play was dead and when Joe stood up they started running down field(Schuman and Freddie Solomon)Joe tossed the ball to Solomon who was ALL ALONE 30 yards behind the defense who were walking off the field thinking the game was over(touchdown!!!).So Walsh who was almost always full of class and would usually not do such a thing had been pushed too far by Paterra and showed that he DID have a little of the payback in him after all.
