Subject: Andy Hanacek needs to look past Soldier Field

Pro Football Weekly's Andy Hanacek did himself a great injustice by ditching the 49ers for acquiring McNown. Not only does he lose creditbility as a writer at the beginning of the column for saying that he is a Bears' fan (which discredits his column's viewpoint from the start), but he makes several statements that have little to no basis. His "facts" have about as many holes as a piece of swiss cheese. How can he compare former 49er QBs, such as Mirer, Druckenmiller, and Carmazzi, to busts. Mirer came to the 49ers knowing he would be no more than a second or third stringer, not a the "savior" of the franchise. Druckenmiller was a bad No. 1 selection that didn't fit the 49ers' QB mold and that was critized by former coach/GM Bill Walsh (who knows a thing or two about good QBs)when chosen, and Carmazzi was an athletic gamble by Walsh who has never seen a regular-season snap due to injuries and lack of comprehension of the West Coast offense. McNown, on the other hand, has experience playing in the West Coast offense, something neither of the above three QBs had much of, and he has been playing with horrible offenses in Chicago and Miami over the past couple of seasons that rather hand off for a 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust than try anything imaginative passing-wise. Andy obviously doesn't know much about offensive styles of football and how some players don't fit into some systems as well as others. Shoot, even the great Joe Montana couldn't have done much better playing in Chicago or Miami with what talent on offense and the systems they ran there the past few years. I don't expect McNown to be the next Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, or Montana, but I do expect him to be a solid No. 2 guy. Not a bad move sending off a No. 7 pick for a guy who went 12th overall in the first round just a couple years ago. Way to go 49ers! I hope McNown proves Andy and all the naysayers wrong.
