Subject: McKinley-Massillon basketball memories (Part 2 of 5)

The 1998 sectional-district semifinal played at the Canton Civic Center between the Bulldogs and the Tigers was another classic. Earlier in the regular season at Massillon, the Bulldogs led by Keith McLeod pulled away for a 65-58 win over the Tigers en route to being seeded #2 in the tournament, while the Tigers were seeded #4. The Civic Center crowd was indeed loud enough at high electricity for this anticipated rematch between the two Stark County powers. With every basket scored, the crowd for both teams got louder. There was the Bulldogs "Let's Go Pups" and the Tigers "T-I-G...E-R-S" chant. In the end though, I was proud of a McKinley 61-54 tournament win. The Bulldogs eventually reached the Final Four where they fell to eventual runner-up Cleveland St. Ignatius. But to see McKinley best the Tigers two games in a row, was so delighting. I wanted to have those two teams play again for an encore.

Part three will look at Matt Creamer's first win over the McKinley Bulldogs and how Dave Hoover's Bulldogs responded following their first loss to Massillon in 1999.
