Subject: Perry finds the running game which grinds the Bulldogs

If anyone thought Perry's 7-0 win over McKinley in 1999 was a supreme joke, think again. For the second straight time, the Panthers defeated the Bulldogs, but the score of 24-7 did not sit well with the 7,000 Bulldog locals who attended the game. In the first quarter with 90 seconds to play, Perry QB Bob Perez hit running back/wide receiver Joe Cerreta for a 24 yard touchdown and the point after by Perez put Perry ahead 7-0. Perez kicked a late field goal to make the halftime score 10-0. The Panthers running game allowed them to control the clock thus leading to the vista of their advantage. The Panthers took the field in the third quarter, knowing another touchdown could effectively end the Bulldogs chances of a victory. Running back Mike Schleiden ran past three Bulldogs defenders and rammed in for a 69 yard touchdown run and the point after increased the Panther lead to 17-0. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard for the first and last time in the game as QB Mile Shaffer went to Bijay Penn for a 15 yard touchdown, but the Panthers turned out the lights on the Bulldogs when running back/kick returner Kevin Woodard ran for an 89 yard touchdown scamper, leaving McKinley safety Adam Studeny, the lone Bulldog giving chase, in the dust. Here is how the Bulldogs fared in Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Coaching, and Player Involvement:
1.Offense. The Bulldogs played better offensively than last week. RB Ryan Brinson ran for 88 yards, and in two games is showing his brilliance with 172 yards combined running. Score:5/10.
2.Defense. Perry gained 357 yards rushing on the ground, and that is not the McKinley defense anyone would have expected. A real backwards step from week 1. Score:0/10.
3. Special Teams. Ryan Brinson did a heck of a job punting the ball, especially under pressure. Big improvement in this category, good blocking by the offensive line. No blocked punts here. Score:10/10.
4. Coaching. The coaching staff lost this one period. The Millers, John and Warren both had stints at Perry, and the staff should have done a better job than what was seen, no excuse for Perry to grind up the clock as they did, the line, Perry controlled the ball for 41 minutes to the Bulldogs abysmal 7 minutes, Panthers Head Coach Keith Wakefield and his cohorts did their jobs to perfection. Score:0/10.
5. Player Involvement: The players still hung in there with each other, but the emotion of the game pretty much drained just from looking at the score, but they have to stay positive. Can they keep it for the game vs. Jackson? Score: 8/10.
TOTAL: 23/50. REGIONAL QUARTERFINALIST. They are fortunate despite the horrendous action on the field to score in the 20's. The forecast for the Bulldogs in the Federal League does not look good, and one may possibly wonder what happened to the 1997 and 1998 touch the Bulldogs had if Jackson wins at Fawcett Stadium this Friday. GO BULLDOGS! CANTON MCKINLEY NEVER GIVES UP!!

P.S. Other football news: The McKinley freshman team lost to Steubenville 18-7 Thursday at Don Scott Field, and the junior varsity turned back Massillon 21-14 yesterday at Don Scott Field. GO CANTON MCKINLEY BULLDOGS!!!!!!!!!!!
