Kid Cudi is one of my favorite rappers all-time. I wouldn't say that he is in the top 5 all-time though. I couldn't honestly imagine putting him on the level of guys like LL Cool J, Lil' Wayne, 2Pac, Jay-Z....etc. Those guys were primarily lyricists.
They're greatest asset is/was writing verses.
Their style is also what's called in Hip-Hop the 'battle-cat' or battle rapper style. Battle rappers are the most lyrical emcees in Hip-Hop. Only exceptional battle rappers become great songwriters. Kid Cudi represents a newer genre of Hip-Hop music.
It used to be called conscious rap, neo-soul, backpacker rap....I call it Hipster-Hop. I feel that artists like Cudi wouldn't be possible without Lupe Fiasco before him coming in the game and expanding on the conscious rap genre. Lupe, in my opinion made it where conscious rappers could be smart or spiritual and still be 'cool'.
Cudi is in a newer category of emcees in my opinion. I view Cudi as a vocalist than a hardcore rapper. I feel like Cudi's style would mesh better with a band than with hip-hop producers. He is a great songwriter because he stays true to himself in his subject matter.
I feel that he packs alot of emotion in his words also.

Lyrically.... he would never be mentioned in the same league as Jay-Z, Tupac, KRS-One, Eminem. Cudi is more of an expressionist than a lyricist. Now let's break down my idea of a pure lyricist.

Lil' Wayne is a pure lyricist in my opinion. He has various styles but I feel his strongest asset is his lyricism. For example, Lil' Wayne can make hit songs that have no chorus. (6'7, Amili) I really doubt Kid Cudi could make an entertaining song without singing, ad-libbing and harmonizing on a hook.
Their were other rappers I feel were mainly vocalists. I feel some rappers have become good singers. I feel that Kid Cudi's style is heavily influenced by rappers that sing on their songs.
Ja Rule was one of the first rappers to make it cool to sing melodies on a Hip-Hop record.
Andre 300 & Kanye West have both done albums where they sing exclusively. Also, Drake is a rapper that's a great vocalist but he's a better lyricist than Kid Cudi. I feel that Cudi is heavily influenced by these rappers: Andre 3000, Kanye West and Drake.

Kid Cudi is also heavily influenced by rock music, techno and electronica. He is a huge fan of instrumental music. I view Cudi more as a lead singer in a band than a rapper. His production team... Emile, Plain Pat, Kanye West...they're like his band and he has the flair to 'handle' each track according to what sounds best to it vocally.
