Subject: WPEN 950 AM to change to oldies Wednesday

More info: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/9539986.htm , http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/columnists/dan_gross/9541515.htm and PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Greater Philadelphia Radio Group, a
division of Greater Media, Inc. is pleased to announce the debut of OLDIES 950
WPEN at 8am ET on Wednesday, September 1st. OLDIES 950 WPEN will play great
oldies music from the late 50's and early 60's. OLDIES 950 WPEN will feature
big name local Philadelphia radio personalities including Charlie Bennett,
Jim Nettleton, Jerry Blavat and Kim Martin. OLDIES 950 WPEN will evoke the
sounds of classic AM Philadelphia radio stations like 56 WFIL and Wibbage 99
WIBG ... big sound, big personalities, good times and the greatest rock and
roll oldies from the late 50's and early 60's!
OLDIES 950 WPEN will replace the current Adult Standard format on WPEN.
The weekday on-air lineup will consist of Charlie Bennett, Mornings from
6am-10am; Kim Martin, Middays from 10am-3pm, Jim Nettleton, afternoon drive
from 3pm-7pm and Jerry Blavat (The Geator) will host a lunchtime specialty
show from 12noon-1pm (starting 9/15) in addition to kicking off the weekends
from 5pm-7pm. Featured artists will include Elvis Presley, Fats Domino,
Chubby Checker and the Beach Boys plus local favorites like Frankie Avalon,
Bobby Rydell and the Dovells. WPEN will continue weekend specialty talk
programming and is the flagship station for Phillies Baseball and St. Joe's
basketball.
"The Oldies format is a natural evolution for WPEN," Brett Beshore,
Station Manager, comments. "WPEN as an Adult Standard format has a loyal
listening that bridges the Oldies format. Our goal would be to continue to
satisfy the musical tastes of our current listeners and introduce this format
to a whole new available audience that we believe is being underserved by
Philadelphia radio." Beshore adds, "You can't find this kind of music on the
AM or FM dial. OLDIES 950 WPEN promises to be great fun with goodtime oldies
fun from rock music greatest era the late 50's and early 60's!"
All press and advertisers are invited to meet the on air staff of OLDIES
950 WPEN on Wednesday, September 1st from 5pm-7pm at the Moshulu on Columbus
Boulevard.
OLDIES 950 WPEN is part of Greater Media's Philadelphia Radio Group
including 93.3 WMMR, 102.9 WMGK and Mix 95.7 WMWX.
For more information contact Brett Beshore, Station Manager at
610-667-8500.

Also I saw a post on the Phillytalk.com boards that says: "WPEN will run a two-hour tribute to "Station of the Stars" starting Wednesday 9/1 at 6 AM" Can anyone confirm this info and what will we hear in this special, old airchecks of WPEN personalities and some songs too?
Your thoughts on the format change?

to the nimcompoops who switched the format at wpen, " You were the station of the stars, now you're not even mediocre. why should i tune in to you, when i can hear the same, stale oldies, in the same moldy line-up, on fm? give it up! for 75 years wpen was special, in the pantheon, now it's at rock bottom! from, "no longer a listener"!

[> What a waste! -- Russ DeStefano, 21:28:04 10/03/04 Sun (pool-151-197-203-246.phil.east.verizon.net/151.197.203.246)

Why would anyone listen to an AM Radio station that plays oldies from the 50's and 60's when you can listen to an FM - WOGL.

WPEN should have stayed with the original format!

Whoever made this decision is an ass!

OLDIES if I want oldies I'll tune into WOGL or WVLT Vineland but when I want to hear BIG BANDS, FRANK SINATRA I turn to WPEN STATION OF THE STARS not station of the oldies
