Hey,
I was wondering if anyone has been to and surfed Hideaways in Fiji? I'm possibly heading there later in the year, but I've heard some very conflicting views about the place. Some say its a paradise, others say not to bother going cos the waves are crap, etc.
Any information or opinions about the place/wave is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

hey guys,
heading back to asu next year and want to 'travel a bit up' again. went there last time and that right ... oh my god.
wondering if you know any local boats that operate out of asu or singkil and that speak english. my bahasa is there but poor. i haven't got lots of money. have info on a big island S north of there that i spent a few months on. will trade info of wave locations for right info in return
thanks
by the way ... to all the complainers: it is bloody hard work getting to these spots so crowds won't come - they want the luxury.

- banyaks/simelue charters -- Ian Rhodes, 11:25:02 07/25/05 Mon
I'm organizing a charter for 6-8 guys and have a few N. Sumatra questions:
1) what's the status of access to simelue and the banyaks by charters such as KM Nauli? I understand that access to those areas is by permit only. Has the recent Aceh peace treaty made this easier?
3) Is tsunami/earthquake damage to Sibolga too extensive for overnights there at reasonable expense and safety?
4) How about earthquake damage to spots? Has anyone verified that Banyaks-area spots still work?
5) How much time is wasted getting to/from Sibolga? I noticed it doesn't have a major airport.
I just came back from an epic trip to W. Java and would happily share details with anyone considering that area.

Personal Opinion -- Nick G, 23:41:23 04/13/02 Sat
Dear Fellow Surfers and Lance
I'd like the first point out that i noticed a few letters said that Lance had named a secret spot in his diary. I dont think this is the case seeing as the name of the secret spot he visited is actually called "secret spot".
I also want to ask an open question to Lance or to anyone else who wishes to answer. Im planning on going over to Indo for six months with at least AUS$6000 dollars. Do you think that this amount would cover me for six months.
And if i get addicted to Indonesian Surfing is there any cheap real estate huts where i can permanently live?
Yours Sincerely
Nick "biscuits" Gillespie

- ASU, BAWA, & Others hit hard - read on... -- Lance Miller, 02:15:36 04/02/05 Sat
http://surfingthemag.com/pulse/lawrence_quake_033105/index.html
More here:
SURFERS WEATHER SUMATRAN EARTHQUAKE
News from local and traveling surfers has begun to trickle in Days after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck islands off Northern Sumatra, news from local and traveling surfers has begun to trickle in.
The epicenter of the earthquake was only 75 miles north of Nias Island, effecting a concentrated region of world-class surf that includes islands such as the Hinako, Banyaks, Nias, and Simeulue.
The earthquake caused extensive damage to buildings, led to a significant loss of life, and traumatized a local population still reeling from the December 26th quake and tsunami.
Jordan Heuer of Saraina Koat Mentawai received news from Nias via text messages from Mike Eu, a Singapore Airlines pilot and surfer. Eu experienced the quake first-hand from his house overlooking Lagundri Bay's perfect right. "My house shook for two minutes. I ran for my life.
It's OK, only some cracks on the walls. It's like a war zone here...like in the movies. Dead bodies all over, roads parted, bridges broken, houses down."
Meanwhile, Henry Morales from Wavehunters Travel received a report from Mark Flindt on the KM Nauli, a surf charter boat stationed off the Hinako Islands. The Hinako are a small chain of islands west of Nias that attract surfers to a heaving left called Asu and a giant bowly right, Bawa (the one Tom Curren tore apart on his 5'7" fish in the mid 90s). Flindt reported massive reef uplifting in the region, with the end bowl at Asu being raised 3 meters. The "nuke zone" as the lethal, barreling end bowl is called, is currently dry and unsurfable. According to Morales, Flindt also saw "new bombies sticking up everywhere."
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that a land-based Hinako camp run by Aussie Mark Grant was partly destroyed in the quake. No guests were present. Grant, currently in Bali, learned of the situation by speaking to acquaintances at the camp by satellite phone. He told The Herald that "we usually only have tides of about three feet, but it's gone out much further than usual and hasn't come back. There are reefs exposed that we haven't seen before."
In the Mentawais, both surfers and surfspots seem to have escaped the earthquake unscathed. As Bruce Jaffe of the US Geological Survey explains, the Mentawais were far from the "zone of uplift," leaving them with little damage. Sean Murphy of Waterways Travel contacted his Mentawais surf charters by satellite phone after hearing of the quake. A relieved Murphy woke up crew on each boat, only to hear they had slept through the quake. As of Wednesday, all Mentawais boats have checked in, reporting safe passengers and no noticeable effects on the perfect reefs.
Farther away, in the Maldives, the Sumatran quake raised concern of another tsunami. Henry Morales heard from Lohifushi Resort surf guide Dan Capel by email. Capel was "warming up for disco" when he was told of the earthquake and a possible tsunami. Once informed, resort guests headed to the bar for a few beers, as the bar is highest point on the island. Capel reported that some guests "started freakin' and panicking a bit... a few guys grabbed their boards ready to bail, but most were pretty relaxed, one Italian asked if I could get him a life jacket while he waited at the bar." Fortunately, no tsunami reached the Maldives.
Back in Sumatra, multiple surf-related aid projects are racing towards Nias and the surrounding islands. SurfAid International has deployed 3 boats and a helicopter with medical personnel. They will address the worst hit areas of Gunung Sitoli and Teluk Dalam, the largest towns on Nias.
The Sumatra Surfzone Relief Organization will depart Padang ASAP on the Mikumba, to concentrate on the smaller islands that might not otherwise receive aid.

Cool site may I say. I'm leaving Friday from France for my second trip to Bali. This time I'm going to try to make it to Sumbawa to check out the surf there, after a first couple of days in Dreamland, balangan and ulu. Looking for a couple of tips on cheap stays in Sumbawa not far from the peaks. Is it the same deal as in Bali, rent a moped and drive around?
Any info is welcome.
Willing to share last years experience.
See ya.

I fogot .. one other question...
I hear there are two options for getting from Medan to Lagundri.. One an 8 hour overland taxi/ride and then ferry or boat.. the other fly on SMAC airlines..
Whats the take on SMAC airlines, I here your boards dont get on sometimes, and you loose a few days waiting around for them?
Any idea how often they run, or what days.. or is it just a matter of finding out when you get there?
Anyone got any ifo on SMAC airlines, would be greatly appreciated.. rough costs, time table etc..
Or should we avoid SMAC at all costs?
Whats your advice?
Were heading off in 3 weeks time!!

Hi everyone,
Has anyone used the FCS soft racks? My boyfriend and I am goin up the coast from Sydney Australia to the Gold Coast (about a 12 hour straight drive). We bought the single rack one. We will be taking a 9' monster and a 6'2" and a 7'2" board with us. When we drove home the other day with just the 9' board and hit about 70Km it didn't feel too steady. Does anyone have any experience? We usually have a different car with solid racks. We will be hitting 110KMs an hour on the highway so I am a bit worried.
Thanks for your help

Yo, I'm heading to Indo for 5 months in Nov. and going straight to off-shore islands. I've heard that with my 60 day tourist visa i'll have to revalidate it each time by leaving the country (flying out) and return with a new visa. This sounds like a load of bollox acting to me, considering time and money it would take, so if anyone could give me a definitive answer (or ways around it) I would appreciate it mucho !

I have a question: my man is a through and through surfer. he has surfed all round the world, but i think his favourite places remain uluwatu, bining (?) and dreamlands. I want to get him a poster sized photograph, but ideally in one of these places, not the standard back-of-the-door sort. he also once mentioned that they did underwater shots where you could see the fins and a hand, and the surfer through the water?
any help as to how i get hold of something would be brilliant.
thanks so much

Step Into Liquid surf film -- Chris Holbrook, 14:11:14 06/03/03 Tue
I just wanted to tell you about an amazing surf film being screened at the LA Film Festival. The details are below. It'll blow your mind.
SURF THE 2003 IFP LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL (June 11 – 21)
Join us for Step Into Liquid, an extraordinary documentary on surfing and the perfect wave
Step Into Liquid
Directed by Dana Brown,
(son of Endless Summer director, Bruce Brown)
Documentary Feature, 2002, 88 minutes
Dana Brown will participate in a Q&A following the screening
With breathtaking cinematography, this documentary peers behind the stereotypes to find the true meaning of surfing: joy. Dana Brown, son of Endless Summer director Bruce Brown, captures surf masters coasting down perfect waves in paradise, but he also aims the camera in some unexpected directions, discovering pot-bellied surfers in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and crazy Texans that ride in the wakes of oil supertankers. More like a religion than a sport, surfing has been gaining in popularity for over 2,000 years. Step Into Liquid portrays the men and women worldwide who’ve devoted themselves to this intricate dance between the grace of man and the force of nature. It’s all about the wave.
Sunday, June 15, 8:30 p.m., Ford Amphitheatre
Tickets are $10

- A Bohemian voyager -- James"The RoamingRedhead"Drury, 20:42:12 05/21/03 Wed
Oi Mates - Tis thee ol' Septic-tank here. Reporting live from the NARD. Just came back from a barely passable trip in the Hinako islands. We got the tail end of a swell and lots of weather to try and discourage us. Not to be deterred we got something anyway. We got Bawa a little overhead, the left around the right of Treasures,a tiny taste of Asu,and the inside bonus wave and the inside left of treaSURES,i think our Captain called it "Bambi's". It's always great to get out that way,it was my second trip,to that region, last year it was Macaronis. I'm set on going over every year now.Especially after getting to know Max and Stu. I hung out and played a little table-tennis with Max(hope you like the paddle)and will get at Stu next year. I was impressed with the lay-out and the atmosphere they had going there. I'm going to book with those guys next year for sure. They've got it all there. And now with that new boat Treasure island is probably in range, and seeing how that wasn't cracking I'll be back. The main Roamie,James

Hey,
We have just set up the worlds first surfing photolibrary called Surfpix (www.surfpix.co.uk).
We would be very interested in any feedback anyone out there has.
Hopefully the library will grow and provide a visual reference for anyone travelling to new spots and anyone interested in surf history.
And although the library will have little commercial interest for individual surfers, pherhaps they will enjoy the opportunity to browse some of the worlds best surf photographers work?

- BALI - HINAKO INDONESIA UPDATE!! -- Lance, 17:59:33 03/29/03 Sat
Here's an email I just received from Max (owner of the Hinako Hideaways). I figured I'd share it with everyone here:
"Gday again mate, I talked to a few people who have been in Bali and they didn't find any trouble with the people. In fact they said that all of this shit has made the balinese even more humble and easier to do business
with. With regards to our neck (Hinako's) of the woods things are still all cool. With merparti air flying, guests will spend even less time in cities enroute to
ASU. Again letthey don't have to stress about that side of things either. Talk to you soon!"
Again, this is for the people considering a trip to Indo!

this site makes me sick. lance miller you are raping a beautiful place to make yourself feel important. if you really understood the 'search' you would not be throwing the pearls to the swine. with every detail you billboard the adventure will decrease, with every spot you exploit the virginity, that to some is a heaven on earth, is diminished...leaving more people looking for less of the shrinking untouched. you might as well open a mini-mall.
there is enough info already available. the beauty of the prize is to he that wins the prize, prizes given out are only party favors to be thrown out soon enough. crowds will come. when they do i hope it is you they drop in on. if i ever find you i will break your hands off for being so selfish as to pretend to share what isnt really yours but all of ours.
i think the small paradises we still have left should remain that way and not be prosituted on the net. but you care more about making a name for yourself.
make your name.
we know your name.
those that dont know may appreciate you, but one day they will know and they will hate you like the rest of us hate you, just like one day you will hate yourself.
of course, in a most considerable fashion, you dont agree with my opinions... because they threaten your sense of importance, your need for greatness.
see you in the lineup, dutch.

Hinako Adventure -- Greg, 14:49:49 08/28/02 Wed
Lance,
Great website! I traveled through Nias and the Hinako's and scored unreal waves. Unfortunately, my camera broke on my last trip and I only got a few wave shots. Your site has sharpened some great memories. I scored Asu at about 6-8 with some bigger sets and Bawa at about 10 +. I also surfed Nias with plenty of size and a lot of fun. I managed to read through some of your site feedback and was surprised to see so many negative responses. I think they (you know who you are) need to understand that greed will get them nowhere in this world, and that’s what they are out to accomplish by requesting you to remove your site. I completely agree that the journey there is a hassle and this will keep travel to a minimum in the area. Another factor is the waves, not everyone is comfortable surfing that kind of power, and many may find out the hard way. Again, great site, it has brought back some unreal memories.

- Accomodation in Bali.. -- Jason, 15:57:20 09/02/02 Mon
Hello,
Im in need of a bit of advice please.
Ive got myself 8 days in Bali before boarding a boat for a surf safari. Ive never been to Bali before, and im not sure what the best plan is for accomadation. Ive seen places advertising surf camps, but didnt want to get sucked in to paying to much, as money is tight for this trip and I am presuming that a surf camp is not needed, and it should be easy enough to get to surf breaks on ones own? Is this the case?
Any suggestions on well located cheap accomodation? As im flying in late, i wouldnt mind having an idea of a place to head for straight away.
Any suggestions would ber appreciated.
Cheers
Jason

- getting a boat in Indo -- Jase, 19:45:18 06/30/02 Sun
Howzit..
Im planning on getting out to Indo around late September.
On this trip i will only be having 2 weeks to surf. Whats the deal with getting onto a a boat for a week? Is it possible for a guy on his own, to try and get on board with others in advance, or do you just need to arive first and then sort it out?
Comming from South Africa,I dont know anything about Indo, or where to go. As i dont have that long(presuming 2 weeks) to get a feel for the place, are there any places you could recomend, that would be away from the maddening crowds. Im not asking for your "Secret spots", maybe just an idea of somewhere easy enough to get to, but not on the main comercial stretch...
Cheers,
Jase

My mate & I are heading to Bali mid July for a 10 day trip that covers a boat trip through Lembongan, Sumbawa and Lombok including Gili Islands etc. I've been to Bali twice before and have surfed Shipwrecks once. We've heard of the main breaks we'll be visiting but any tips or comments on them or the other spots? What sort of conditions can we expect at that time of the year...wave size etc? I am taking a 6'5' and a 7'0' board...will that be sufficient? Also putting a first aid kit together with hopefully all the essentials. Any tips on other things to take?
Much appreciated if Lance or other guys can post answers, comments or stories of similar boat trips.
Cheers

Head Check?!? -- Craig Fraser, 03:21:52 07/24/01 Tue
When I first stumbled accross your site, I was stoked to see some photos of places that are among my favorite on this planet. I too know the feeling of scoring 3X's overhead ASU with no one out but your mates. What I do have a problem with(and I'm sure Max and Steve would too) is you talking about that secret spot. You we're right, that not many know of it. That's because they have the intelligence and the decency not to splash it all over the net. Have some respect for those of us that have treked through the jungle, copped malaria, and ridden in the dungeon class of those ferries you talked about. Just because those guys on ASU showed you the spot, doesn't give you the right to publicize it. Would you like to go back and find 50 people camped out there?
You seem like a reasonable guy, so why don't you drop me a line. I have a couple of suggestions for your site that might help us both out.

Either take this site off the net or watch your back very carefully mate, as you don't know where the next knive may be coming from.

Anyhoo, last summer in 00 I had a GREAT trip to Morocco with like 15 of my best buddies from cal and fla. There was this one spot where you could take a single wave and ride it for like a freakin 50 yds...a serious spiritual event in my life. If you are thinking of a trip, think Morocco or Costa Rica-pacific side.

After the sept 11th incident alot of people were fully spooked with the Indo muslim thing, i just thought i'd tell you first hand that we didn't encounter any anti vibe over there. All was well, after you guys left we got the best XXXXX (secret spot) I've ever seen a good 8 to 10 ft and flawless. It was the biggest swell in about 5 years. Lance,
great work with the site. I too love the waves of indonesia and hope to get over to ASU sometime soon. I spent a bit of time in Lombok and Sumbawa traveling and surfing this year and it was awesome. I found that the places I enjoyed the most were the lesser known breaks and places coz they still have a sense of tranquility.
One question, how did you learn to make an internet site, did you do a course on it or just learn as you went along, because I wouldnt mind doing a similar thing.
cheers

I could not agree more with Craig Fraser about his comments about this website advertising this area on the internet.
Lance it sure sounds like you had a great trip, but why do you have to go and do something like this, do you want this area to become the next Mentawai's?
I also have been travelling to this area for the last few years and like you and many others have scored excellent waves with very few people, but does that mean we come back home and splash it all over the net for the whole world to see. Thats why i am asking you Why Mr Miller??I am sure you would like to go back in the future and share the same experiences you had this year, thats why i would encourage you to take this site off the net. So all of us can continue to enjoy what this beautiful part of the world has to offer.

Lance,
My trip to asu was awsome!!I was there with Steve Rink( hows the face Steve-o?? We have some good pics of the stitching mate) We didnt get to surf ASU going off it was onshore or too big the whole time. But we scored the NOT So secret spot and BAWA going off!!! 10-15 the first day(like going from little league to the Super Bowl!!!)We did run into the Indies Trader III at the secret spot but they left soon after we got there.
We also found a new left with Max that we named Idiots because it was so shallow and we surfed it without helmets- on the right swell and wind it could be WORLD CLASS. Never did get to me Steve, but Kelly, Max and Fern-dog were excellent hosts and friends.
The crew we surfed with were awesome too.
It was a lifetime experience.
I will return.

- Dead fish can be dangerous -- Joseph, 08:25:32 08/05/01 Sun
Playa Zicatela, Mexico. So i make it through a little and fast yellow-brown barrel, choppy and heavy seas that day. I jump off my board on the sand, stoked. I was like 2 miles from my rented room and the main breaks. I take my board, run back to the water, in my mind wanting to be in the water 'til dark. But i dont even have time to breath that i step STRONGLY on some fish with spines. (bonefish?) It was hidden on the edge of water, under the whitewater. The spine went through my foot and i fell down like if i was taken fast by the earth. I took it off right away..I ran (tried...) for 15 minutes, suffering alot. For like more than a hour, i was whining, it hurt so bad under my foot and it was hot. Then....it just went away, what a relief, in seconds it was history. !

hey lance,
At the same time you were over at bali, me and my mate were there too and I was going through the days when you's surfed Ulu's and we would've been out there. It was so good hey. We surfed Padang, Impossibles, Bingin, Balian, and Medewi. man indo rules. we stayed at Maniac Surf Camp atout at Uluwatu, the coolest guy runs it, his name is Agus. Its a super laid back place which is great for surfers. We also went on a boat trip to Lombok and Sumbawa and scored Desert Point 6 foot and pumpin! Then we got skunked and didn't get a surf at Scar Reef or Super Suck, we had to surf Yo Yo's which is a sectioning right hander near Super Suck, not to good. It was so good to read your diary of your trip and to see those pics was sick too. That was my first time to Indo but I so wanna go back next year, G Land for sure next time. Take Care.

- Hinako's Surf Trip -- Craig, 15:40:34 07/09/01 Mon
Hey Lance, when i read your story posted on the Net Bodyboarding site i thought youd copied my diary from my trip to Asu in July 2000. My story is so similar its not funny! On a super clean day around 8-10 foot i copped the second set wave lip on the head and got my rashi pulled over my head thus making it very difficult to swim/dive under the next 4 waves. Gasping for air i had to catch some whitewash in and scramble up the reef to safety. Thats the worst situation ive ever been in.
Asu is a totaly sick wave and we scored it almost every day for 10 days and then got some Bawa action. The place has almost machine like consistancy, over 14 days i didnt see a day under 3 foot of swell. Its a pity you didnt see Bawa with better waves, its not as heavy with at least 6 foot of water between you and the reef, but it has long rides with some hollow sections to get shacked.
Definately not a place for the inexperienced or beginners though - super heavy when it gets big! Hows the end section that Steve calls the NUKE ZONE! I also hit the reef there and cut my back open - heavy, but the barrells are just too good to resist.
Steve, Max and the crew are totally awesome, cant imagine better people running a surf camp! Totally agree with you on all your comments.
The trip there is a bitch though, it took us 3 days from Bali due to the Palni ships being late and going to the wrong place! Instead of taking us from Padang to Nias we ended up back on the mainland in Sibolga, but steve sorted the situation out for us, none of us spoke indonesian so without him we were srewed. The bus trip across Nias was killer too, it had recently pissed down rain and washed half the roads away, anyone feel like re-building a bridge today? But thats all a part of the experience in a 3rd world country, crazy shit!
Overall the trip of a lifetime, hope to get back one day. Best surf camp and waves ever!
Nice site Lance, i couldnt find much info at all on the place when i went over!
