Subject: Agreed

I can't agree enough with Linda's assessment that the band is simply trying to do what it thinks is best for itself and for the new music. Why would they intentionally try to shut us out? At the same time, I also agree that they aren't doing themselves any favors by not stirring up some PR. The timing seems to be right to me (and I hereby volunteer to write the press release, since that's basically what I do for a living anyway).

Whatever the case, I think the fact that they were burned a few years ago has perhaps made them extra cautious. Too cautious? Maybe. That's a matter of opinion. They signed a management deal that was the equivalent of handing over the rights to all their music after a set amount of time. Are they going to be wary this time around? You bet.

I've said before and I'll say again -- they've waited this long. After 16 years, only those of us here on this board and a few others truly care if the Romantics ever release another album or pick up a guitar or tease their hair. That's the way it is in the music biz (see Linda's post about Rod Stewart). So they are essentially beginning from scratch, and they want to make sure they work with someone who understands their opportunities and the marketplace. Top 40 radio will NEVER play a new Romantics song. You need Warner Bros. or Sony paying off Clear Channel Communications for that, and that is not forthcoming. No, the Romantics are going to have to attack college radio, AAA radio, alternative and indie rock radio, etc., and tour, tour, tour. That's their only chance at selling a respectable number of CDs. If it works, then they can come back in a year to release something else -- god knows they have enough songs and enough demos in the can -- and build on it.

Ever since I heard "Paint the Sky" I believe AAA radio is a possibility. If so, then a decent distribution deal -- getting the album into chain stores and on CDNow -- is a must, so that if someone hears a song, they don't have to search for it. You can only sell so many CDs off a stage. And people who come to a Romantics show now often are just washed-out 40-year-olds who want to hear "What I Like About You" played live. They're going to spend their money on watered-down beer, not a CD by a band that, in their mind, has come back from the dead.

What I'm saying is, after all this time, if they're gonna do it, they should do it right and take their best shot. No matter how long we real fans have to wait. And that's all I've got to say about that ...
