Subject: 6 degrees of separation...

In this day and age, a tragic incident like the one at the World Trade Center and in DC and Pittsburgh touches many more lives than ever before....Half of a century ago, something like this would not have affected nearly as many people--we would have heard about it in the news in the days following, but we would probably not have known anyone in NYC.

My sister lives in NYC and works on Manhattan. The first thing I did when I heard about the crashes was to try to call her and see if she was okay. Thankfully, her office is not very near the WTC. Her boyfriend, however, worked in the WTC on about the 50th floor. By sheer coincidence, he had gone outside of the building that morning to talk to his father on his cell phone when the attacks occurred. He is also, thankfully, okay....

My best friend was in the subway in DC when that attack occurred. In a wise decision by the city to minimize the panic of the people in the subway, all she heard was an announcement that the Pentagon stop was closed. She is a cardiologist and was supposed to attend a conference that day. After she left the subway, she heard about the tragedy and viewed it on the TVs at her conference (with was later dissolved). I was so glad to be able to hug her yesterday--one of her fellow doctors had to BRIBE a rental place for a van to drive back from DC to Iowa. My friend had her group drop her off at a truck stop in Toledo, where her mom met her and picked her up to take her back to Michigan....

One of my friends' sisters worked at the Pentagon with the woman that they kept broadcasting on the news--the one who talked to her husband as their flight was being hi-jacked. I cannot even begin to comprehend how my friend's sister must have felt when she heard the news....

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is one of the tenants in one of the buildings owned by the company I work for. We are at a loss as to what to say to our tenants--I am sure that I have talked to at least 2 people that worked at their headquarters in the WTC in the past. We hope, but don't know how to ask or find out if our contact people are okay....

Alice: I am so very sorry to hear about your family and your son's loss.... Your lives have been permanently altered and it is unfortunate that you will not be able to build new memories with your son's fiancée. It is completely unfair that your lives have been disrupted and that your son did not have the chance to say goodbye to his fiancée.... However, I am sure that wherever her spirit is, she knows the love that your families and your son feel for her. She is in safe harbor now....I cannot fully understand, but am sympathetic to your great loss--especially since most of the people killed were innocent and minding their own businesses when all of this happened....

You see, these terrorists have caused all of us to be re-awakened to the anger that still persists in this world....The best thing we can do for ourselves is to find love and give our love to those of us still here--we must not succumb to the urge to retaliate in hate--That would mean that we've stooped as low as the terrorists who have taken away our feelings of safety and freedom....

Let's all hope that more survivors are found. Each of the lives that can be saved will mean one more person who will be able to share his or her memories with the world and one less person who the terrorists were able to kill.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected by this tragedy--whether directly or indirectly. However you have faith and in whatever religion or beliefs that you have, please keep all of the victims and their families in your hearts.

I'm sorry for the long post, but for someone who has never seen such a tragedy occur in my lifetime, I had to let out my feelings....

Peace and Love....

--Iris
