As soon as I saw "guilt", I started thinking that at some point, Xander dusts Spike (or Angel, but not really since A has his own series), keeps the vampire's fate to himself, and learns belatedly that Buffy & Co might have needed Spike (or Angel).

Oh, the Sopranos is on!

--anyway, real quick, 3Strikes mentioned something about Xander's usual support (Buffy, Will, maybe Giles) being unavailable to him, and then I read "guilt" was a motivator, so I figured that Xander did something to piss off the gang. What could it be? Killing a prophesied savior might do it -- esp if the other possibility (Angel) is indisposed (soulless) at the moment.

I mean, I really can't think of more than two reasons that X would opt to vamp:

-- they NEED a vamp w/ a soul asap, or

-- "Lie to Me" (ie, Xander gets horribly sick from something but wants to help the cause at a critical time; thinks if Spike could overcome evilhood, then anyone could, badda BING!)
