Something has to be done about the little red van
. You cannot even go over the speed limit by 1 K. or he will write you a ticket. He got me the other day for going through a yellow light (3 points and $144. cdn.) Would anyone who has had a run with him in the last 20 days please let me know. And maybe we can put a stop to him. A few of the drivers have been talking and I think we figured out why he has a dislike for cabs. Would the person who diddled his wife please speak up and let the rest of us drive in peace. Thanks.

Once again, I've proven my point. One person is regulating us, because he's got a hate on for cabdrivers, because in his little mind, the little red van man believes we are on the bottom of the food chain.

I believe this problem exists in many cities. One police officer has decided he's going to put the cabdrivers, who haul the drunks, who are always there when the police need bodies moved, and clean up their messes, in our place. Who regulates the regulators.

Police generally don't give us too much trouble in Iowa City, but I had one nearly give me heart failure a couple of days ago. Use of the alleys is important in navigating down-town Iowa City, especially right now that various streets keep getting shut down for construction. One alley in particular is a very important short-cut right now, as the only alternative is a 12 block stretch full of traffic lights and one-way streets. It's a short, narrow alley, it's two-way, and it happens to house the ONLY entrance to a popular down-town bar, so it's usually full of pedestrians.

Anyway, I turned my big-ass Buick station wagon into the alley, going under 5 miles an hour, when a police cruiser comes FLYING into the alley from the other direction, I have just enough time to register his speed by the way the cruiser BOUNCES out of a pot-hole before he's slamming on his brakes, leaning on his horn, and coming to a stop a couple of inches from my left quarter-panel. Meanwhile I'm trying to make enough room for him to pass me without hitting a wall, a dumpster, or a blue-haired raver.

The cop didn't have his lights on, let alone his siren, and if there had been anyone walking at the other end of the alley, he would have run them over. I found out as well that he cut off one of our other drivers in the process of turning into that alley.

Fact is, regardless of how severe the emergency might be, that level of recklessness is inexcusable. I seriously considered filing a complaint, but there's only a total of 70 drivers in Iowa City, and only one other car looks just like mine. I decided against making myself a target.
