Subject: Re: IDEAS PRECEED LANGUAGE
In reply to: SwimmingUpstream 's message, "IDEAS PRECEED LANGUAGE" on 16:09:29 01/12/00 Wed

Language is two things: the set of syntactical and semantic rules (the grammar) of the spoken and written word, and the sentences so far constructed using those words. These are both ways in which the word 'language' is used.

The idea of language is, like all ideas, a human invention.

To assign it an independent existence is a mistake.

Or is this wrong? Could we say that since humans created language, it now exists? - 'independently'?

Ideas don't exist in a vacuum, and I reckon they didn't exist before animals 'had' them.

The only way I can make sense of ideas is that it's one of the things man (and other animals) 'have'.

Can ideas exist without the 'container' of medium of language? They probably can't be communicated without it. Can they exist without it. Probably. The possibility of language preceding ideas seems remote. After all, language is itself an idea.
