Free at Last

Barry Adamson from Moss Side Story

All who know me - knew I had to have me a little Barry lovin' in the game. He is my all time fav.

I picked Free at Last as a compliment to Kenny dying. It seemed to me as if Kenny wanted to leave the battle as the victor, dead or alive. So in dying, his victory was to widen the split between love and hate in Ian's mind. The elation at the beginning of the song is the joy that he still won - the turn at the end of the song is the knowledge that he will not be physically around to enjoy the win.

I don't believe that Kenny was supposed to live in the end - and that TPTB had to improvise at the end of the show to please the fans. We're happy about that, but did he really have to come back as a thug still? Where oh where is my Jazz Devil. Sniff... Sniff...

Rumor was Bowie wrote the song because he saw two lovers standing by the Berlin Wall. Really, he saw Tony Visconti (then married) and Antonia Maass kissing by the Wall.

My reason for choosing this song - I think in Kenny's mind, he is embarking on a relationship with Sara (the mistress) while his wife, the Blade, watches. Ian is the observer.

I picked this one because I love the primal feel of the beat, the raw energy, and the eclectic mix of styles. The song reflects for me the workings of Kenny's mind when he bonds with the Lance.

So why... I pick this song for this moment because Ian destroying the painting of Kenny foreshadows a his own possible death in the last show (sword though the neck). This mirrors a scene in the movie when Dafoe (playing the bad guy), sets fire to a self-portrait in his studio in a talismanic anticipation of his fate.

This song was playing while he was burning the painting. I find it very haunting - one of my favourites from a soundtrack.
