Spacey searches for star
(CNN) -- Kevin Spacey is looking for a few good scripts. And filmmakers.

The actor and several corporate sponsors have teamed up to start TriggerStreet.com, a Web site that offers a forum for aspiring screenwriters and directors. Creative types can submit their scripts and short films and then go through a judging process that will culminate in several awards -- and some great exposure, the organizers hope.

The site opened for business November 10. In the first week, said Spacey's business partner Dana Brunetti, more than 14,000 people have joined, with 380 screenplays and 200 short films uploaded.

The project arose out of frustration with the producing process, said Spacey, whose production company is also named Trigger Street.

It's difficult to accept unsolicited material, he said, because you risk legal exposure if people accuse you of stealing their ideas -- even if a project had nothing to do with them -- but "what's frustrating is that some of the best material is chucked over the wall," he said. "I felt there had to be a way to break down the wall and still protect myself."

TriggerStreet.com allows people to send their material "over the wall" -- but they have to get past a strict registration process first, which should weed out dilettantes, said Brunetti.

Moreover, TriggerStreet.com members who would like to submit a script, for example, must review two other scripts before entering their own. The idea is that the best material will rise to the top.

Spacey hoped the site will help breed new talent, and said it's a way for him to give something back. "I've been given such great fortune and opportunities. ... I figure, isn't this what I'm supposed to do?" he said. "We're here to send the elevator back down."
