Firefly isn't a second Witchblade, but it's not another Star Trek either. It's completely character driven -- no aliens etc. -- and I'm getting attached to the characters. About the only thing it has in common with other Joss Whedon creations is that it's clever. For instance, sometimes the crew throws in some Mandarin Chinese, a word or phrase here and there, but we don't know yet why. In fact, I wouldn't know it was Chinese except for reading the boards (which also explain why). Still, you have to accept the fact that it's, for want of a better word, a yarn and not worry too much about scientific inconsistencies. The engine doesn't look like it would run a steam boat. This could drive hard-core sci-fi fans nuts, and could explain why it isn't getting better ratings. The pilot was something of a dud because Fox scraped Whedon's original for something with more action -- bad idea -- and he had to write it in a weekend.
