Characters

Sally, young maiden of 18, an orphan
Bob, her neighbor, a fitter of 30
Bill, her groom, a farmer of 25. living on the other side of the river
John, a boatman of 57
Simon, a former preacher and a cunning man of 40.

Story

Once upon a time in a small town Florenswill lived a young unexperienced girl named Sally. She had a groom named Bill, she got acquainted with in the Church a year ago and the couple was going to marry in a few months. Bill lived on the other side of the river. Her neighbor Bob liked Sally and even saw her in his erotic dreams. Once in this town a terrible storm with strong wind, downpour, lightning and thunder happened. After the light in Sally's home faded, she got frightened and came to Bob in horror not to stay alone during the disaster. Bob calmed her down, gave her brandy and it happened that she wake up in his bed! The storm quited a bit, but now Sally was in horror because she lost her innocence! Being a honest girl she decided to tell her groom about it and ask him for support and understanding. But the bridge was strongly damaged by the storm and she could not cross the river. Then she remembered about the boatman and asked him for help. John did not want to boat because it was still dangerous, but Sally cried and asked him. Then John agreed but asked Sally for sex with him and the miserable girl after crying accepted his condition. Having reached Bill's farm Sally cried and told her story but Bill called her a whore and turned her out. Then Sally decided to jump in the river and sink, but on the bank she met Simon and told him what happened to her. Simon persuaded the girl to leave the town and start a new life. Sally calmed down a bit and decided to return home, pack her things and leave. But how? Simon suggested her going on the half broken bridge. He was very interested whether the girl reaches the other bank carefully: this way he wanted to check God's mercy. But in the middle of the river Sally fell down and sank. Simon, who was very disappointed in God, did not even try to save her.
