Subject: Osbornes in England

John Osborne posts from Surrey, England.

I trace back to a Thomas Orsbon who married a Catherine Brown at Stapleford, Nottingham in September 1764. I believe Thomas came either from the Nottingham area or from Stratton Audley in Oxfordshire. He was a serving man in the employ of the Borlease Warrens who had estates both in Nottingham and Stratton Audley. In 1766, two years after they were married, Thomas and Catherine moved south and took over the Dog and Badger public house in Medmenham Buckinghamshire as tenants of the Borlease Warrens. Incidentally the pub is still there and open for business, 250 years later!

I think the switch to OSBORNE came first with Thomas's son, Thomas, who was an OSBORN and then his son Henry who was an OSBORNE. I suppose it depended to a large extent on how they pronounced their names to the clerk of the parish. With a strong regional accent and a heavy cold, Orsbon could easily be Osborne. And spelling – to ‘e’ or not to ‘e’ – was not the forte of many parish clerks. (A personal note here: what I find so annoying is how many people want to put a ‘U’ in it. Sorry any Osbournes!)

As far as I am aware, no one from this branch of the Osborne family has migrated to the States. But if you know of any Osbornes who came from mid-18th Century Nottingham or Oxfordshire, my e-mail is john.osborne@farmersweekly.net
