Subject: Wont go into park!!!!

When my wife got to her work this morning, in her 1996 Lumina, she attempted to put her car into park but it went into reverse. She put it back into drive, pulled it up and tried it again and the same occured. How can I fix this myself? I have considered it being that of the linkage but an not certain.
