Subject: Engine ticking

i have a 1999 chevy cavalier. and it has this ticking noise coming from the engine. i have heard other cavaliers that make the same sound so i had asked what it could be and i was told two things one that it could be something with the timing and the other could be the idle tension. if you have any answers please email me back. that noise is driving me insane.
