Subject: volume turns right down when i turn it up...why???

i have two 12" alpines and i have a 450 whatt "thump" amp. the first problem was i had a 10 g. power and ground wire. then i changed to 8 g. power and 4 g. ground. it still dont work. i have a factory cd player though. that might be why. i turn my volume up and it turns right back down automatically. and no sound is coming out of my subs, but when i turn my car off i hear the subs make a quick noise, like they have been turned on working. my amp power is on and everything i just dont get why my subs wont work? should i get a cd player put in instead of my factory cd player? help?????
