Subject: ignition coil smoking and no fire

I have a '94 GMC Sonoma that I swapped an '88 4.3L into from an Astro van and am using the wiring set up from a '90 Jimmy. was running great and just died could smell burning plastic. Have fuel but no fire. Replaced pickup coil, module was tested and said to be working okay, so I put a new ignition coil on it and it started to smoke after it was all hooked back up. so I disconnected the battery right away. what would cause this? Anyone have an idea?
