Subject: newly installed stereo is ON and as a result, dash illumination is NOT

I bought a Kenwood 516S CD head unit for a '91 Nissan Stanza. I first tried to hardwire install. After hook-up the radio worked but the clock got partial power(after ignition turned off, clock failed to keep time), and with the headlights on, the instrument cluster did not light up but the AC buttons did. I then realized that my hardwire expertise was limited to American makes and quickly purchased a wire harness. After connecting the corresponding colors, it became apparent that my error may turn out to be costly. The instrument cluster still does not illuminate with the headlights on but the stereo is jammin. NOTE: I noticed no change in any lighting by connecting the orange illumination wires vs. not connecting the illumination wires (horn, dome, little AC lights work). Is there a fuse or relay for the cluster that may have blown, or is the problem with the illumination wires?
