Pure and simple, Buell is making 1000cc bikes that are underpowered and more expensive when compared to the Big 4s' 600cc bikes. Why would anyone want to buy a modern sportbike that had such a suck-ass engine at its core? If Buell would be willing to scrap the "everything must be powered by a V-twin" concept and came up with a decent 3,4, or 5-cylinder, multi-valve engine, I think riders would start flocking to their door. And yes, Honda, Ducati, and Aprillia all make great V-twin sportbikes, but they are doing so with agressive racing efforts and technology-first mentalities.

Buell talks about usable hp... what is that? To me it's just an excuse that Buell uses to try to smooth-over the fact that their engines are underpowered when compared to other manufacturers. Buell will talk and talk about low-end and midrange torque and hp being more "usable" on the street. Well hell, my R6 makes plenty of power to get around town and in and out of traffic... it's called "down-shifting." Out on the open road, same deal. And once you get out to the track for drag racing or road racing, the Buell will be left in the dust. Why would anyone want to pay $10,000+ for a bike that is out-performed in every category to another bike that you can get for $8,000?
