It was probably a tin back...those rust. I've usually had the opposite experience with stuff dug on the coast...stuff usually comes out pretty clean....there might have been a lot of fertilizer at one time used in the area you dug it.

Here's something that may help..put a couple of cotton balls in the container and sandwich the button in between them. That way when you travel or it rattles around in your pocket you won't beat the thing to death.
