Cory, to my knowledge there's not many laws that applies to metal detecting in SC. The only State Parks that you can't detect in are Rivers Bridge and Andrew Jackson or around the lighthouse at Hunting Island. They are considered historical. City and county parks you can call or go by the parks and recreation department in your area and ask them for permission. City and county are different so check with both. Wherever you hunt, it's best to get permission from somebody that has that authority. It's not fun when someone walks up and says: what the heck are you doing on my property! Who told you, you could do that here??..... You know what I mean? That's no fun at all. A while back, my wife and I were detecting a litle park in Sylva, NC that was only two years old, that we thought might have some jewelry in it. We had permission from the parks and rec. dept. up there to detect. Well, it turns out that this park is city owned and the parks and rec. dept. didn't have anything to do with it. The cop that ran us off told us about it too! There was also a sign in front of the park that said : NO METAL DETECTING : that we walked about two feet from and didn't see it!! He was nice about it though and just told us to stop detecting. I guess he could have charged us if he wanted to.
I have been looking at an old house site for the last couple months . Just the other day they tore the old house down and cleaned up the lot and it really looks good for detecting. The only problem is, I can't find out anything about who owns it. Well, actually I know who owns it but I can't get a real person to talk to. Bellsouth Telecomunications owns it but I can't find a number or anything. Every number we've found, we get a recording that sends you here and there but not the right place. Nobody seems to know anything about it. Things like this can be frustrating but I will keep trying 'cause this place looks good....
Schools, if they are active, you should talk to the principal or the school board(which will probably send you back to the principal)........ These are just some things that come to mind. There are more, but you get the idea.
If you have permission, the hunt is more enjoyable. If you are like me, I can't hunt while looking over my shoulder..LOL.............. HH'ing...............Glenn...
