1. I'm not sure how long a lion could survive without food, but I'm pretty sure it's well under three years. Door number three would be his best option. That is, unless the assassins have gone without food for three years also.

4. This is a stretch, but my guess is newspaper. It's covered in black ink when you buy it. It's not red, but it's read when you use it. And if you forget to take the recycling out for a few weeks, it's gray when you throw it away.
