I celebrated this holiday as a child. When I married Mr. Logan I adopted his holidays and I remember decorating my first Christmas tree in our apartment. On the desk nearby sat a menorah. It was neat to have both holidays glowing in my new home.

As an adult and parent I only celebrate the Americanized Christian holidays. Scoff at me, if you will, but this is our choice. We, as a family, believe in God and we hold respect and consideration as the most important aspects of life. It doesn't seem to have affected our girls in an adverse way that we don't belong to a church or temple. God is very much alive in our home. There are those who would say that is not possible, but we have made it our truth.

My daughter will sing a beautiful Hanukah song in her high school concert tomorrow night. It is the same song that she and her best friend were practicing for a concert when she was in fifth grade just when that friend was about to move to California. That was five years ago. I had to leave the room at one point, I was so overcome with emotion. The friend's mom is my best friend, and our younger daughters are the same age and were best friends as well. Michele and I have the same birthday and we spoke on the phone on Saturday, wishing each other a happy day and telling each other how much we still miss each other.

Tomorrow night I will cry during that song. I always cry during school concerts, when the chorus does their harmony thing. I will miss Michele even more, I will remember the Hanukah menorah I used to light and I will wince at the fact that my "baby" is already in tenth grade. Where do the years go? And what do you do when Santa Claus is no longer an expected visitor in your house? /me winces and sniffles.
