Subject: MARTIN

I am seeking help tracing information on my great grandfather, Carl Fitz Heunrich Martin, and one of his sons, Oscar Hugh Martin. One source, the NSW Australia Marriages Fiche spells his name as Fritz but the copy of the marriage certificate I have spells it Fitz. His occupation on the marriage certificate is listed as ‘jeweller’.

On 9 April 1890 Carl Fitz Heurich Martin married Edith Marian Paul, at Braidwood, NSW, Australia. Their marriage certificate gives absolutely no information on Carl Martin except that he is a bachelor. Carl and Edith had four children:

Theodore Margaret Martin b. 4 August 1891 at Braidwood NSW Australia, died 13 January 1892

Laurence Paul Martin b. at Braidwood NSW Australia, 1894. Laurence married, but had no children.

Elfrieda Mary Martin (my grandmother) b. 13 September 1985 at Braidwood NSW Australia(no information sought)

Oscar Hugh Martin b. unknown, possibly New Guinea. Oscar married Essie ? and had one child, Anne.

The information I have comes from my grandmother’s birth certificate: Carl Martin, Musician, 53 years, born Salzgetta, Germany. I do not know his birth date except that in 1895 he was 53 years of age indicating he was born in 1842, 21 years older than Edith who was born in New Zealand in 1863. Carl had a brother, Otto, who was a publican in Mittagong. I do not know if the brothers came to Australia alone or with their parents, or if Otto married. I have been unable to find any information on their arrival.

The ‘story’ goes that Carl and Edith lived in New Guinea, Carl being a (German) Administrator there prior to WW1. Edith suffered malaria for the remainder of her life. When Carl died (and I have no idea where or when he died) Edith sold his musical instruments - supposedly among them a Stradivarius violin - to raise money to feed her family. There is a picture of the family, without Carl, living in Sandgate, Queensland. The three children appear to be in their late teens and I have no idea when they moved to Queensland, or when they left. When my grandmother married in 1920 she was living back at Braidwood, NSW and her father – Carl – was deceased.

I am trying to determine when they were in New Guinea, if Oscar Hugh Martin was born there and if Carl Martin died there or if he returned to Germany and died there. I have no idea who to approach so any ideas would be appreciated.
