Subject: Joseph Petty

For forty years I have been hunting the origins of my ancestor, Joseph PETTY, b. March 18, 1765 perhaps in NJ. He married somewhere to Elizabeth, who was either a VANATTA or a MIDDAGH, both families claim her, neither can document her birth so we do not know who she was! They had ten children starting w/ Moses, 1785; John,1787; Margaret, 1791; Mary Ann, 1794; Johannah (Jemima); Sarah,(Sally), Elizabeth (Betsy); Aaron, and Jacob, my line b. in 1801. Joseph, Jr., b. in 1803 went to IL in the 1830s along w/ Moses and several sisters. Jacob remained in OH. We have never been able to tie Joseph Sr., into the only PETTY family in the area of NJ in which he lived which was Capt. JOhn Petty and wife Margaret in Warren/Sussex Counties. John died in 1792 and Margaret must have been a second wife for John's first child was Ebenezer, b. too early to have belonged to Margaret. Where did they come from? Does anyone have proof that Joseph is of this line? This is a brick wall of the worst kind: Impossible to climb over!
Any hints or clues will be appreciated. We have combed through records in NJ and across the river in PA all to no avail. The earliest record of Joseph in NJ is a militia list in 1783 on which the Capt. has two known sons, Jacob and Peter. Isn't there a family Bible somewhere? Jacob and Peter each discuss their father having a Bible which included their birth years.
My Joseph served as Notary Public and TP. Treasurer in OH so he was apparently literate. some of his offspring were literate, some not. I guess it depended on where they lived and how turbulent the times were whenever they were of school age. HELP!
