Subject: FYFE - Glasgow, Scotland to Australia

My husband's great great grandfather was James Fyfe (yes indeed, another one!) and based on information obtained from varying birth certificates of his children he was born sometime between 1837 - 1839 in Glasgow, Scotland.

James fathered 9 children with Ellen WHELAN (or possibly even Ellen CHRISTY, as she seems to interchange her maiden ame throughout the many certificates (birth and death) that I have obtained)

James and Ellen had the following children:

Janet (Jeanette) Wood FYFE (b.1864)
Mary Jane FYFE (b.1865-d.1867)
Mary Jane FYFE (b.1867-d.1867)
William Henry FYFE (b.1868-d.1869)
Jane Annie FYFE (b.1870)
James Wood FYFE (b.1872-d.1951) - to which my husband is decended
Mary FYFE (b.1875-d.1943)
Isabella FYFE (b.1878-d.1951)
Johnothan Henry FYFE (b.1880-d.1957)

Our family history research has now hit a real stumbling block as I have not been able to locate a marriage between James and Ellen, although the birth certificates I have, have a marriage date and place listed - the trouble is that Ellen (as the informant) has recorded one date in her first child's birth certificate - 17 Dec 1863 Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; and then another in all the other certificates - 12 Jan 1862 Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia. My guess would be that James and Ellen weren't married although this is only heresay.

Perhaps there is someone else out there who has come across this family in their research?
