Subject: Alexanders from Cork to Viginia

I need information or suggestions about finding who and when my family (Alexander) emigrated from Ireland. The earliest "hard" data I have is John M. Alexander from Kentucky listed in the U.S. 1830 census. His parents were from Virginia-no other info.

According to my grandparents, my forebears emigrated from County Cork to the US; possibly from scotland to Ireland prior to that. But, I've hit the proverbial brick wall. Since much of the Irish census data prior to 1837 was destroyed, I don't know where to look.

can anyone suggest any sources?

Thank you.
