Subject: BENJAMIN

I am trying to research my BENJAMIN line and am having quite a time with it.
I am going to list some of the things I have found so far and if anyone out there can give me some hints, tips or suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I have been trying to find the parents of my great-great grandmother Madeleine Benjamin (born 1871).
I cannot get a birth certificate because it is too early for the state of Alabama.
I do not know where she was married.
I recently received her death certificate from the state of Pennsylvania.
Her third husband put "unknown" for her mother and father.

Madeline had a sister named Mary Benjamin. Mary never married.
Both Mary and Madeleine eventually ended up in Pennsylvania.

Since I found little on Madeline I figured I would try Mary.
I saw a listing in the Social Security Death index for several people with the name Mary Benjamin.
From the 1920 census info that I found on her, I picked the one who died in PA and had a birth year close to the one my Mary Benjamin would have had.

So now I have a death certificate for a Mary Benjamin, but I really do not know if it is MY Mary Benjamin.

The death certificate is for a Mary S Benjamin died 23 Sept 1969.
Never Married
**MY Mary was never married (that is a match)

Usual Occupation: Retired Housekeeper
**1920 census for MY Mary: Nurse (not a match).

This Mary was born 25 Jan 1877.
** On the 1920 census MY Mary said she was 42 years old.
That would put her birth year around 1878. (match?)

Birthplace on death cert: Pennsylvania
*** On the 1920 census MY Mary said she was born in AL. (not a match)
Could it be an error on the certificate?

Parents on death cert:
Father Looks like Oscur Hambn Benjamin
Mother: something is scribbled out (I think) and then it says: Amanda Montgomery

Madeleine ( my gg grandmother) was supposed to have two sisters: Mary and Amanda (I still have not found Amanda).
Madeleine gave her first son the middle name Montgomery.
Is this just a coincidence?

In 1870 there was a BENJAMIN family living in Huntsville, AL (the birthplace of my gg grandmother).
This was a year before Madeline ( my gg grandmother) was born.
I cannot find this family in 1880. But here is what is listed for 1870:
There was a 26 year old Amanda married to a 32 year old Oscar Benjamin.
They were living in Huntsville, AL.
The mother lists her birthplace as AL (that is a match)
The father lists his place of birth as PA (that is a match)
Another coincidence? perhaps.
However, there were two children listed: Eliza, age 3 and Minnie, age 1.
I have never heard of Madeline having any siblings named Eliza or Minnie.
Could they have died young?

I went to the web site of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints. I did a search on Oscar Benjamin.
I did not get much back, but this came up:
Oscar U. Benjamin married Armanda Montgomery
1 Oct 1865 Madison, AL.

Here is what was found on the 1920 Census for Mary:
She was living with a family with the surname: LATHAM.
Mary is listed as a cousin.
There is also an 80-year old Aunt Amanda living with the Latham family.
Could this Aunt Amanda be Mary's mom???

That is all I have found so far.
What should I do next??????
