(The picture was taken by me on July 4, 2003 after the first of many storms passed through) -Lori
This poem was written to a challenge, all words required are in bold
Burn sky, burn
666…the number of hours of straight rain
yearning for the sunlight – reeling from drought’s pain
thunder and lightning ceaselessly invading our land
the beast is free in our streets – it has left Bethlehem
after it birth… Burn sky, burn.
Cat running in the distance, it’s silhouette following close by
Running in stretched circles – Exaggerated cries
Flood the air as the sirens wail their dark, dark, dark scream
Rising tide of emotion standing hair on end – surely no dream
Could match this… Burn sky, burn.
Sting's “Fields of Gold” is playing in my frightened head
as the sky churns like a caldron and the rivers have turned dead
Flood waters, I’ve swam in them many times before
True, the sun has a jealous sky that loves to settle out the score
Because it can’t feel… Burn sky, burn.
Draco’s wings are stretching somewhere above the cloud caps
In his starry heaven with Orion and Ursula Major taking naps
Or perhaps, they are watching the fireworks down below
The earth is slowly burning… Yes God, it’s quite a show
When the sky plummets and swallows… Burn sky, burn.
Fire and ice… heat of the afternoon engulfed with the frozen burn of hail
Lives ending in defeat as submerged branches break – where human will fails
White River raging, Big Blue weeping, mighty Wabash cursing
Their creation upon this Earth – their lascivious smile grinning fiercely
Their mask a tempting swim in their waters… Burn sky, burn.
Dark, dark, dark are the clouds that raged down and still tumult
Into fits of rage and satisfaction – Is this nature of our own fault?
Sirens piercing, still, this air that’s clammy to the touch
Lightning flirting – reminding that God exists… We’re given that much.
Along the banks in Indiana the muddy water rushes on
As we coward beneath a sky when the peacefulness is gone
Fields destroyed and homes now lost in this year of two thousand three
Blackness still traveling this way the newsman reveals to me
Greed washed clean from bloody hands… Burn sky, burn.
Burn
