Little Girl Blue– The Sequel

I watched the police car drive away
with Dee, the daughter of Mayme
I thought about that child
and knew life for her was no game

I can see her tear stained face
looking up with this question
“Can you help me find my mother?”
In her eyes there was a sad expression

Why must children bear the brunt
for mistakes made by a parent
They should not pay the price
when their lives are inerrant

I carried these thoughts home
wondering what I could do
Were there many children
hurting like Little Girl Blue

After a few fretful hours
I picked up the phone
dialed the Police Department
and heard one speak in monotone

"May I have information on the child
called Dee, the daughter of Mayme"
I was asked, “Are you a relative,
what is your name”

I said, “I found the child
sitting alone on the street
Is there anything I can do to help”
I sensed a silent dragging of feet

I was told to call Family Services
where Dee was taken today
“Why don’t you give them a call
and see what they have to say”

I dialed the number I was given
and talked to Cleota Sloan
She said the child’s mother had come
and demanded she take her home

She said, “It was just a silly thing,
Dee was to meet me at the bar"
The child had mis-understood
and had gone down the street too far

I asked, “Do you really believe what
this child’s mother had to say”
“We can not prove anything,” I was told
“I’m sure we’ll see her another day”

I hung up the phone and bowed my head
And prayed for Dee and her mother, Mayme
Somehow I would find a way to help
That will be my goal and aim
