The Race
“I will win this race today”
said the ostentatious hare
“I will win this race today
Foxy, catch me if you dare”
Lenny, the cunning fox smiled
as only he could smile
“I’ll catch you,” said he
e’en if it takes a while”
The hare gaily hopped along
giving his bunny laugh
The fox thought to himself,
“Do I eat the whole or half?”
Rabbit stew would feed
my entire family
Carrots from the garden
would taste fine with bunny knee
The ostentatious hare began to
wonder about the fox’s smile
He hadn’t lost that cunning smile
though they’d traveled many a mile
Surely that fox had something
up his sly, foxy sleeve
A trickster himself was the hare
and thought of a way to deceive
They were running through
the tangles of a blackberry vine
The rabbit let out a terrible yell,
“The thistles are poking my behind”
The fox thought, “Now I have him
where I want him, sure as can be”
He poked his head under the vine
and was caught fast as 1,2, and 3
The hare was standing back
laughing at the wonderful game
The more the fox tried to get free
the more tangled he became
“I’ll get you rabbit,” said the fox
with a most awful leer
“Your time is limited,” he snarled
“From me you have something to fear”
The rabbit stretched out on the grass,
yawned, and prepared to take a nap
The fox quieted down, then decided
he’d better put on his thinking cap
After a while along came a turtle
moving mighty slow
The fox whispered to the turtle,
“Free me, I’m caught don’t you know”
What would I receive for this noble deed
if I should help to set you free
“You’ll teach that hare a thing or two
and I’ll let you live with me in a tree”
The turtle smiled and then he said,
“Lenny, take a look my friend
I carry my house upon my back
Why should I a helping hand lend”
The fox gave one of his cunning smiles
and then he slyly said,
“Turtle, wouldn’t our lives be better
if that ostentatious rabbit were dead”
The turtle thought for a while
then he slowly shook his head
“This is your problem Lenny,
I’m going back to bed”
Into the shell went the feet,
the tail, and the head
Soon a snoring could be heard
he was sound asleep in his bed
The fox was seething with rage
but there was nothing to be done
He would have to bide his time
and let the rabbit have his fun
Eventually the rabbit awakened
and was ready to resume the race
He had decided to release the fox
so the fox wouldn’t lose face
He tapped upon the turtle’s shell
and said in his ostentatious way
“Tom Turtle, I’m leaving now
you can release the fox later today”
“I will win this race today”
said the ostentatious hare
“Lenny, enjoy the blackberries
perhaps with Tom, you could share”
