Who is the Best?
“I am the best,” said Timmy, the toad
as he hopped down the road
“I’m not so sure.” said Bea, the butterfly
as her wings softly began to unfold
“How foolish you both happen to be”
said Rufus, a large bumblebee
“I wonder if your eyes have ever seen
a creature finer then me”
What did the two of you happen
To see when you looked into a mirror
I see an ugly green creature with bumps
and a mis-shapened creature to fear
How beautiful is a toad or
a butterfly, do tell me please
If being your best surpasses me
I will bow to you on my knees
Watching all the ruckus from
high up in the sycamore tree
a wise old owl intently listened
“Who is the best?” asked all three
The owl blinked his eyes
then a smile crossed his face
“I’ll show you who’s the best
by entering you in a race”
The old owl cleared his throat
and in a raspy voice he said
“There is a way to settle this,
to see who comes out ahead”
In the center of the forest
there is a large oak tree
On the ground in front
will be acorns that number three
The one who lands on
the top of an acorn first
will be considered the best;
the one who is last, the worst
Timmy, the toad knew he
could “hands down” win the race,
for he could hop very fast
if he didn’t fall on his face
Rufus, the bumblebee
said, “I’ve got it made;
why, I could win this race
even if I rested in the shade”
Bea, the butterfly decided
she must fly with all her heart
She knew she was fragile
but she would fly hard and smart
The owl gave the signal
for the race to begin
Timmy was hopping fast
on his face was a huge grin
Rufus the bumblebee was
buzzing so very loud
He floated along like
he was floating on a cloud
Bea flew with all her heart
though she was getting tired
Then she heard the cry of
the meadowlark, and was inspired
She felt strength return to her wings
and joy filled her small heart
She saw the oak tree ahead
swiftly to the acorn she did dart
The wise old owl was sitting
high up in the tree
He blinked his eyes, smiled, and said
"You’re the best of the three"
Along came Timmy, the toad
unhappy as could be
“Bea did not deserve to win,” he said
“I am the best of the three”
The wise old owl said to Timmy
“The race has proven who is the
best of all three, Bea flew
with all her heart, didn’t you see?”
Rufus flew in buzzing and made
quite a stir with his complaining
“It’s just not fair for her to win
I could have won, but was refraining”
“Don’t you realize I was just
trying to be nice to all
I am still the best of the three
That should be the call”
The owl patiently listened to all
the pitiful whines
Being a wise old owl
he read between the lines
“Timmy, you and Rufus
have a problem, don’t you see
Your only concern is to be
the very best of the three”
“Bea’s attempt was from the heart
She was not trying to be the very best
yet, giving her very best to the race
helped her to win the contest”
The moral of this story is this,
“It matters not who wins the race
but who is willing to share
their heart with loving grace”
