THE BEACH

The sands are haunting the horizon, the gulls are mourning soft.
A simple melody’s stuck in my mind as the clouds make love aloft.
The waves are crashing inward, threatening to snatch away my soul.
I toss my hair ribbon into the waters… I’ve lost my self-control.

I know the waters are chilly, in fact, the cresting waves are deathly cold
But the rhythmic dancing of the white caps, are something I wish to behold.
My lover has abandoned me. On this beach, we used to play.
He said he had to leave for another, there was just no reason left to stay.

Things were just routine, he said, my body had lost its charm.
He wanted that exciting thrill felt only in a stranger’s arms.
So now I stand on this beach looking at my watery grave.
I thought about the poem “Footprints” and wondered if I’d be saved.

For, there was only my set of footprints there on that lonely beach
Because love had left me again and left comfort well out of reach.
But just at that moment, a warm thought engulfed my being’s core
Perhaps I was to live on this Earth to seek that Something more.

And after tossing my hair ribbon into the waters, I receded back within
The confines of my beat up car and started that third rate engine.
God had heard me after all, although I did not pray.
He had provided me with a longing and that longing was to stay.
