Lots of you know my from the Realm.....for those who don't
most of my stuff is better left until you have a coffee in
hand and 20 minutes or so.....I tend to be long-winded, I
guess because I'm just addicted to narrative verse!! Enjoy!

A spur-of-the-moment errand
She'd be back in just a snap
She needed milk and a loaf of bread
She'd put the kids down for their nap
They'd moved in only days ago
Boxes still sat everywhere
She'd been so busy since they arrived
There'd been not a moment left to spare
His new job was most demanding
And he wasn't the one to blame
But three kids in less than four years
And her life had never been the same!
Joshua was the oldest
The twins followed when he was three
Then just last week he had turned five
As proud as he could be!
She loved them all in her mother's heart
They were the best part of her life
They made sense of all the hassles
The chaos, moves and strife
But with three kids all not yet in school
Her days were filled with stress
The nap they took each afternoon
Was her only chance to rest
So on that fateful Thursday
Her list of chores was long
She grabbed her keys and headed out
Not suspecting one thing wrong......
The first strange inkling that she had
Was on the homeward trip
She heard sirens in the distance
And they made her heartbeat skip....
The express check-out was crowded....
She'd been gone for half an hour
The sudden urge to get back home
Was potent in its power!!
Then turning left on to the avenue
She saw her driveway down the street
Obscured with fire trucks and squad cars
Flashing lights and running feet!
She stopped the car on the center line
Raced on foot and almost fell.....
Where her house had stood an hour before
Was an inferno straight from hell!
The fire's roar was covered up
By the pounding of her heart
From far away came the fireman's voice
"The wiring's where it seemed to start....."
She felt her insides turning weak
And knew without a doubt
She'd never hold her kids again
She screamed, "Dear God! Get them out!"
Then a strong arm went around her
And caught her just in time...
"Your kids are at the neighbor's house
And all three are just fine!"
Later on, a little crowd
Gathered at the kitchen table
Of the kindly neighor who'd helped the kids
As much as she was able!
Joshua sat on his mother's lap
As everyone asked him questions
He answered them as bests he could
Trying to see in all directions!
"I woke up and smelled the smoke
And I was really scared...
I yelled for Mom a lot of times
So I knew she wasn't there...
Then I peeked out of my bedroom door
And saw fire down the hall
So I ran across to Mama's room
Cause I didn't hear the twins at all!
They were sleeping in the crib
The way they always do...
All curled around each other
And still asleep I knew!
Then I heard something crackle
Outside the bedroom door
I touched the knob, but it was hot!
The fire made a scary roar!
Then the telephone on the dresser
Rang over and over again...
I knew it'd stop if I picked it up
So that's what I did then
And I heard a man's voice say 'Joshua!
Are you being good today?'
I told him yes and then he said,
'Listen carefully to what I say'
I held the phone in both my hands
And listened very hard
He told me I should take the twins
And go out into the yard
But the fire's in the hall, I said
We can't get out that way...
The man said, 'Listen to me now
And do just what I say...'
He said, 'Take your Daddy's bat
From the closet's lower shelf
And use it to break the window...
But please don't cut yourslef!
Be sure you knock out all the glass
Then put a blanket 'cross the sill
It's only four feet to the ground,
Joshua? Are you listening still?'
I said, Yes, but I am really scared!
He said, 'I'll stay right here with you
Put the side down on the crib
Like you've seen your Mommy do
Roll one baby in a blanket
Over and over again
Hang her out the window first
Before you let her drop and then
Do the same thing with the other one
And when they both are down;
You climb out and hang there
Before you drop onto the ground...
Then take the twins each by the hand
And walk, don't run, across the street
To the white house with black shutters
The lady there is very sweet!'
When Joshua finished telling
The tale that he'd begun
There was not a sound inside that kitchen
Not even a single one!
Then the kindly neighbor lady
Cleared her throat and said,
"Thank heaven for that phone call
Or all three would be dead!"
Now the fireman and all the others
Who had listened to the tale
Were suprised to finally notice
That the mother'd gone deathly pale...
"Ma'am, " they asked, "What is it?"
"You look like you've seen a ghost!
Your children are all safe and sound
And the insurance will cover most!"
But still the woman trembled
As though a chill attacked her bones
"The voice" she whispered hoarsely
"The man on the telephone---"
The fireman touched her shoulder, "Yes!
That's how the kids survived!
If Joshua hadn't received that call
None of them would be alive!"
The mother wildly shook her head
She was still half numb with shock,
She tried to speak as the fireman,
Nudged his partner; "Get the doc...."
The woman then stood suddenly
Desperate to make them understand
"I know the children all are safe"
She continued to wring her hands.
"But what I'm trying to say is...
Joshu couldn't have gotten that call!
We moved in only days ago...
We have no phone service yet at all...
They said they couldn't come till Monday
And when would we be home?
This is Thursday....how could there have been
Anyone on that phone?"
Joshua looked up most confused
"But Mama, I heard it ring...
And when I answered, the man was there
And he took care of everything!
He told me just what I should do
And that I shouldn't be afraid...
Because He was always with me
And that He heard me when I prayed!"
Joshua glanced 'round at the grown-ups
Who'd been struck mute one and all
And with the simple logic of a child, said
"I'm glad God picked today to call!"
