Little Girl Blue

I watched this child of five
sitting on the curbside of the street
carrying the weight of the world
upon her tiny body and feet

There was sadness in her eyes
tears upon her small face
She had a ragged doll in one hand
and was staring out in space

I crossed to her side of the street
looked down at her and said
“Little girl, where is your Mother,
you should be home in bed”

She looked up at me from her seat
and had these words to say
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers
but my Mommy has lost her way”

Could you help me find her
She said she would be back soon
She left me here this morning and
promised to be back at noon

There was no food for us to eat
in the place where we live
Mommy had to find “John”
She said, “Money he would give”

I said, “I’ll get you some food
from the vender down the street”
I took off my heavy coat
and wrapped her to her feet

I hurried back with a sandwich
and a large box of fries
She took a bite of the food
as tears ran from her eyes

I told her I would call someone
to help her find her Mom
I dialed 911 from my cell phone
Soon we met a Sergeant Brahm

She looked down at the child
and said, “Honey, what’s your name,”
The child softly spoke and said,
“I am Dee, the daughter of Mayme”

“Can you show me where you live”
She pointed down the street
The officer took her by the hand
placed her in the car’s back seat

The officer looked at me and said
“We’ll take it from here,
we’ll see she receives good care
you have nothing more to fear

I looked down at the child
and wondered about her fate
I was so glad I had found her
before it was too late

There are many evils innocent
children have to face today
It breaks my heart that many
have to bear a cost they cannot pay
