Sitting on a curb in the middle of town
Staring down a road that leads nowhere now…
Wondering where it ever ends.
Kicking stones in a dusty lot
Contemplating death ‘cause it’s so hot…
Counting empty houses where there used to be friends.
Catching my breath ‘neath the star-lit sky
That sweet evening air that pleases the eye…
Surrendering to thoughts beneath the stars.
Carnival shutdown, a humdrum sight
Unless you work beneath those gaudy lights
And night eases into your soul and eases life’s scars.
Yes, I’m the only one awake just enjoying my breath
That’s clouding into the silence of amazing depth…
Waiting for tomorrow to tease another spell.
Sitting on a curb in the middle of town
Staring down a road that leads nowhere now…
Enjoying a life that many say is hell.
Walking through a town after closing time
Seen as a carney… humanity’s slime…
Perhaps it is best to shield this poetic heart.
Tired feet marching back to a makeshift bed
Octopuses, Tilt-o-Whirls… stallions dancing in my head…
A darkened carnival lot… Man’s haunting art.
