THE STRANGER

A man approached me just yesterday
and asked "Why such the long face?"
That worn-dead question stung me
and my heart sunk to a slower pace.

I didn't know how to respond to him.
I wish that you were there with me
because there'd be friendship and laughter
and not all this stranger mystery.

"I met a man I loved one day.
In return, he loved me dear.
But you see, he has left me...
left me alone to cry my tears."

The man looked at me as though a hero,
"Why, ma'am, that man was sure the fool
to leave you all alone once more
and to let your heartache boil and brood!"

"There's another heartache here,
I have a little girl in preschool.
She doesn't understand her daddy's leaving."
"Ma'am, that's just plain cruel."

"I have friends who support me now.
They help with the tears when they can.
They know how much I had loved him...
No, that's how much I STILL love that man."

The man thought he had won a place
within a woman's broken heart.
A broken down being
is not the place one would like to start.

Where were you when I was talking?
Were you watching me from afar?
Could you see my pale, hurt face?
Oh, could you see my deepest scars?

"Where is he now?" The man asked to me,
"What made this man so want to leave?"
I looked at him with tear-flooded eyes,
"Follow my finger and you shall see."

I pointed his eyes across the park
to those hollow, crowded rows.
"He's buried there beneath those trees,
in the cemetery 'Maple Tree Groves'"
